But there is one thing I haven’t told you. I do remember it. I know I’ve said I don’t, but that’s only partly true. The thing is, I had never seen that before. It was like that long pause before checkmate, but in a good way. Impossible not to remember. And even without that the checkered board seemed endless. It was so vast I feared I would lose myself just counting the squares and knowing I would never have enough pieces for my queen to belong. It was my only move that could protect both sides, and yet I fancied myself quite the strategist.
But as opaque as I thought I was at the time, I know better now. Thank you for always allowing me to believe my transparency is voluntary.
